We have a very special treat for this month's meeting.  John Hood is no stranger to conservatives across the state and is nationally recognized as an author and political commentator.  Under his leadership, the John Locke Foundation became a powerful force in the political arena, bringing once-inaccessible political data to citizens and politicians alike and acting as a watchdog on the antics of Jones Street.  They publish the Carolina Journal, sponsor the E.A. Morris Fellowship, the North Carolina History Project, and the John William Pope Center for Higher Education Policy.  Hood is a compelling speaker with nearly three decades of watching North Carolina politics to draw upon.  He should also have copies of his latest book available.

John Hood is president of the John William Pope Foundation, a Raleigh-based grantmaker that supports public policy organizations, educational institutions, arts and cultural programs, and humanitarian relief in North Carolina and beyond. Hood is also chairman of the board at the John Locke Foundation, a North Carolina think tank that issues reports, hosts events, produces broadcast programs, and publishes Carolina Journal, which serves an audience of nearly 150,000 North Carolinians through its print, online, and radio editions. Hood helped found JLF in 1989 and served as its president from 1995 to 2014.

Since 1986, Hood has written a syndicated column on politics and public policy for North Carolina newspapers. It currently appears regularly in the Winston-Salem Journal, Durham Herald-Sun, Gaston Gazette, High Point Enterprise, and newspapers in 60 other communities. He also writes a monthly column, "Free & Clear," for Business North Carolina magazine. Hood is a frequent guest on talk radio and serves as a weekly panelist on “NC SPIN,” a political talk show broadcast on 28 television and radio stations in Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Greenville, Wilmington, Asheville, and elsewhere.

Hood is the author of seven books. The most recent one is Catalyst: Jim Martin and the Rise of North Carolina Republicans, published by John F. Blair in 2015. Hood’s other books include Our Best Foot Forward: An Investment Plan for North Carolina's Economic Recovery (2012), Selling the Dream (2005), Investor Politics (2001), The Heroic Enterprise: Business and the Common Good (1996), and two volumes of family history.

Hood writes and comments frequently for national media outlets, particularly National Review and its blog “The Corner.” His articles have appeared in both magazines — such as Readers’ Digest, The New Republic, Military History, and Reason — and in newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and The Chicago Tribune. He’s been interviewed by, among others, The Washington Post, The New York Times, CNN, CNBC, NBC, and Fox News

At JLF, Hood created the E.A. Morris Fellowship for Emerging Leaders, a yearlong program that prepares young North Carolinians for leadership roles in government, business, and nonprofits. He also serves on the faculty of the N.C. Institute of Political Leadership, the board of the William Friday Fellowship, and the selection committee for the Marshall Memorial Fellowship.

Hood received his degree in journalism in 1988 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he founded a magazine called The Carolina Critic was eventually published on six university campuses. Hood currently serves as chairman of the Carolina Liberty Foundation, which provides financial support to conservative and libertarian student groups at Chapel Hill.

He is a Mecklenburg County native and currently resides in Wake County with his wife, two sons, and a stepdaughter.

We have a very special treat this month with Hamody Jasim ("The Terrorist Whisperer") as our featured speaker.

Hamody Jasim is a counter-terrorism expert & advisor and one of the most lethal intelligence sources that served during the Iraq war as a young Iraqi who was recruited by U.S. Intelligence after saving an American Military officer who was nearly abducted by al-Qaeda. His intelligence information changed the battle for the Marines in the Fallujah/Ramadi area by taking out one of al-Qaeda’s main operatives. He then went on to protect the Americans in the Operations Center in the Iraqi Ministry of Defense by intervening a suicide belt before it detonated. He was known as the pro American to the higher intelligence agencies who would report his street level intelligence to the direct presidential advisors. People he helped called him the “Terrorist Whisperer” because he could take on the terrorists face to face by identifying their weaknesses.

You can purchase his book, The Terrorist Whisperer: The Story of the Pro-American on Amazon

We have a very special treat this month with Dale Folwell as our featured speaker.  Dale is running to be North Carolina's next Treasurer.  Dale served in the NC House from 2005-2012 and served as Joint Caucus Leader and Speaker Pro Tempore during his service in the Legislature.  He was ranked as one of the most conservative legislators during his tenure.

In 2013, Dale was appointed Assistant Secretary of the Department of Commerce and was instrumental in helping North Carolina pay back nearly $3 billion in Federal Unemployment Tax debt that the Democrats had amassed.

Dale is a CPA, has his Master's Degree in Accounting, and was a Vice President and Registered Investment Advisor for Deutsche Bank.  He is one of the most qualified candidates we've ever had for Treasurer.

SPEAKERS:  Municipal Candidates - Focus: Zebulon

This month, we're batting "cleanup".  That means that we've invited candidates from all over East Wake County and some from Raleigh.  We'll have just 5 days until the Raleigh/Cary elections and, as we've been discussing, what happens in Raleigh affects us all!  We'll get one last push to support Robert Weltzin for Raleigh Mayor as well as the other city council candidates.

This will also be our last meeting before the November elections for our municipal candidates here in East Wake County, so we've invited them all back so you can get a chance to meet them and learn how you can best help them win in November.  We heard from Knightdale candidates in August, Wendell candidates in September, and we hope to have our Zebulon candidates here this month.

It's going to be an action-packed evening!  Don't miss an opportunity to impact our state starting right here at home!
